Illinois History

'We come and go, but the land will always be here. Those people who love and understand it are the only ones who really own it- for a while.'  -Willa Cather  O Pioneers!

"The Great Crawford County" once covered parts of three states and enveloped 57,000 sq. miles; today Crawford County is approx. 442 sq. miles.

In 1678, Captain John LaMotte, a Frenchman and member of the exploration party exclaimed about this location "The Prairie to the north and the woodland to the south remind me of the land of milk and honey."  Palestine was founded in 1811.
